Multimedia data including graphics & audio requires large memory space, more transmission bandwidth & large channel capacity for their transmission. In an uncompressed form, these images require huge memory storage and very large bandwidth for their transmission It has been estimated that over 80 billion new digital images are produced yearly.

Despite rapid progress in mass-storage density, processor speeds, and digital communication system performance, demand for data storage capacity and data-transmission bandwidth continues to outstrip the capabilities of available technologies. The recent growth of data intensive multimedia- based web applications have not only sustained the need for more efficient ways to encode signals and images but have made compression of such signals central to storage and communication technology.

This thesis covers the methodology, which includes study and implementation of the wavelet image compression methods to code and compress the image data to reduce the storage space, channel bandwidth, and improves the transmission rate.
